Mary Tomei (she/her) is a theater director based in New York. Most recently, she directed a production of Halfway There by Norm Foster for The Snarks Ltd. and the 2nd annual Night of New Work, an evening cabaret featuring new songs by artists such as Tom Kitt, Adam Gwon, Shaina Taub, and others.
This past summer, Mary directed the premiere production of The Angel Makers, a new folk-rock musical by Amanda Freedman and Lorenzo Pipino (learn more here). The show was produced by SheNYC Arts as part of their Summer Theater Festival at The Connelly Theater, and was awarded Best Production of a Musical, Best Score, and Best Leading Actor in a Musical (Holly Hinchliffe for her performance as Suzannah).
Additionally, Mary worked as the Script Assistant on Out Of The Box Theatrics’s workshop of STARSTRUCK, a new musical by Beth Malone, Mary Ann Stratton, and Emily Saliers (learn more here). Her other recent directing credits include Bright Star at Ghostlight Theater Camp, Jordan Knitzer’s Itchin’ for an Itch: The Mosquitical, awarded BEST PRODUCTION SHORT at New York Theater Festival, and assisting on King of Pangaea by Martin Storrow (directed by Richard Israel) at NAMT’s 34th Annual Festival of New Musicals and then the Dramatists Guild Foundation.
Mary received her B.A. in Theater from Northwestern University, where she directed the 78th Annual Dolphin Show, the largest student-run musical in the country, and was the Artistic Director of Purple Crayon Players, a nationally acclaimed Theater for Young Audiences organization.
She is interested in creating accessible theater that challenges all audiences, primarily through new work and musical storytelling. She is dedicated to empowering her collaborators and fostering artistic community that invites people to show up with the fullness of their identity.
